About us:

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance.

The ICRC also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles.

Established in 1863, the ICRC is at the origin of the Geneva Conventions and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It directs and coordinates the international activities conducted by the Movement in armed conflicts and other situations of violence.

Minimum required knowledge & experience:
  • Ideal age: 25 to 45
  • Prepared to accept unaccompanied posting for a 12-month mission in Pakistan or Afghanistan
  • Excellent command of Pashto or Urdu and English; Persian an asset
  • University education or 2 years of professional experience
  • Driving licence (for manual transmission vehicles)
  • Fully conversant with IT tools (word processing and table sheet)

Standard function description:
  • Oral interpretation: from Pashto / Urdu to English, and English to Pashto / Urdu during confidential interviews with persons detained in prisons, ICRC institutional dissemination, message delivery and visits to families of detainees
  • Written translation: translation of written Pashto / Urdu (newspaper articles, correspondence, Red Cross Messages, etc.) into written English

The Profile:

ICRC is looking for professional individuals who are strongly motivated by humanitarian work. The successful candidates should have the ability to work in a team and well-developed writing and summarizing skills. The above position demands flexibility and the ability to work under pressure.

We offer an opportunity to help the victims of conflict, engrossing, rewarding work in unusual situations. For reasons related to the institution's working procedure, in particular its principle of neutrality, ICRC personnel cannot be nationals or originate from the country where the visits take place.
